OLIPHANT on Leadership

OLIPHANT on Leadership conveys the extraordinary talents of Patrick Oliphant who drew the political cartoon "All Hail, Obama" (at left) that was published on October 23, 2006!

Prescient about the politics and events of his time, Oliphant was described by one reviewer as "one of the few cartoonists in that field who can communicate -- and punish -- with the quality of his art alone."

Documentary Filmmaker Howard Weinberg first met Oliphant when President Richard Nixon was about to leave office in 1974.  They have known each other through all but one of Oliphant's Presidents.

Weinberg and Studs Terkel profiled Oliphant, then at The Denver Post, with his friend and fellow cartoonist, Bill Mauldin in a two-part 1975 PBS show.

With charcoal at the ready, Oliphant draws on a gigantic scale for the opening of his exhibition at Hope College.

Oliphant's large charcoal portrait of Obama is another highlight of his traveling exhibition.

(see detail below)

Weinberg involved Oliphant in The Robert MacNeil Report; The MacNeil/Lehrer Report; The Dick Cavett Show; Listening to America with Bill Moyers, on PBS; America's Election 1996 for NHK, Japan; Unraveling of a Candidate for Discovery Channel.

Oliphant used Weinberg's name in several cartoons over the years.

Oliphant came to the United States from his native Australia in 1964 to draw President Lyndon Johnson.
